Digital, TV Opps: Aldi focused on London and South East

Opportunity: Has already doubled its digital advertising spend this year when compared to 2015, and continues to buy mostly site-direct. Sellers should be all over this as we enter the largest supermarket advertising period this Q4. Video, mobile and desktop ads have doubled impressions as well, so make the most of this! 

Big ticket items, like wine by the case, have caused a spark in business and 28% of sales are coming from London and the South East, where Aldi is expanding from under-representation.

Those in ATL and digital channels should reach out soon and target mums and millennial families. McCann Manchester still handles media planning and buying.

Media Spend: Spent £71.7m in 2014, 27% higher than the year before due to an increase in radio, TV, outdoor and digital spend. 

Digital Breakdown: According to Pathmatics, the grocer has spent £1.06m on desktop so far this year with 46.4m impressions. Of those, 97% were run site-direct with top sites overall including, and 

Mobile and tablet has seen 15.1m impressions so far after Aldi spent £203k. Investment in video has totaled £9500, which has brought about 687k impressions. 

During the same period last year, Aldi spent just over half as much as this year on desktop, mobile and video. 

Expansion: Aldi announced that it would open more shops in the UK than Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons combined with a £600m investment. It hopes to increase its UK workforce by 8,000 to 35,000 by 2022 and open 130 new stores.

Competition: Asda are all competitors, but especially Lidl, which has a similar discount pricing model.
