On the Brink - Score 68: Burton's Biscuit Co. taps new CEO for business transformation
Subject: Digital, Branding, CRM, Media, Manufacturing, Biscuits, Outdoor, Press, Radio
Company: Burton's Biscuit Company – the only major biscuit manufacturer in the UK focussed solely on biscuits; manufactures Maryland cookies, Cadbury biscuits, Dodgers, Wagon Wheels, Lyons' Biscuits and other savoury snacks.
Opportunity: Promoted Nick Field from CFO to CEO, after seven-year incumbent Ben Clarke stepped down. The position includes joint leadership with COO Simon Brown, who will head day-to-day operations. Together, they'll lead Burton's "business transformation agenda."
Recently, the biscuit company announced it would launch a transformational growth plan across its Maryland and Jammie Dodgers core brands. This comes after Burton's sold its Cadbury business to this July, the company appointed digital creative agency Be Wonderful, which will create video shorts for an international conference and internal communications.
Following marketing hires and production/expansion investments of the last nine months, Burton's is inevitably prepping for its festive season push. Note, it's been looking to broaden its audience as competitors below target kids and millennials. ATL and online sellers should chomp down on this opportunity immediately, as well as keep up with strategy changes for the coming year. Outside of Christmas, expect to see another push for Valentine's and Mothers' Day in 2017.
The company has experienced major executive shifts and product acquisitions, but still has a long way to go on brand building. There is a CMO vacancy, since Stuart Wilson left last year, and an incoming CEO will obviously fill this gap. Media and creative agencies, don't wait for this opportunity to crumble. Start laying ground work by the end of 2016 and be prepared to pitch ahead of H2 next year.
Executive Shifts: In January, the company promoted Isabel Lydall to insight manager to manage return on investment. A year ago in June 2015, Burton's appointed its first ever managing director over the UK and Ireland, Mr. Ian Deste. This followed the departure of CMO Stuart Wilson in May 2015, who had been with Burton's since 2010.
Media Spend: In 2015, Burton's spent over £292.4k on radio, outdoor and press. 2016 is seeing similar spending with less devoted to outdoor.
Competitors: United Biscuits.
Agency Relationships: The company has been with AORs VCCP for more than six years, well beyond the average tenure of 2.5-3 years.
