Allianz Global Investors makes slew of decision maker shifts, including CEO

Company: Allianz Global Investors – a diversified active investment manager with a strong parent company and a culture of risk management. With 24 offices in 18 countries, they provide global investment and research capabilities with consultative local delivery. They have £291bn in assets (as of June 2015) under management for individuals, families and institutions worldwide.
Opportunity: Allianz has seen many changes throughout the year in terms of leadership, and much more shifts are to come. From 01 March, CEO Elizabeth Corley will step down, and Mr. Andreas Utermann, currently global chief investment officer (CIO), will take over. At the same time, acting head of Europe and current global COO, George McKay, will become co-head.
Ms. Corley will remain on the Board as vice chair, a newly-created role, representing the firm externally on certain industry, policy and regulatory matters as well as in ad-hoc client engagement. Mr. Utermann will continue to be responsible for the firm's investment platform as Global CIO, whereas George McKay will be responsible for global distribution, global solutions, corporate marketing and COO functions.
In addition, last month from 01 Oct, Mr. Mike Riddell was appointed as fixed-income portfolio manager for the UK business. This follows the appointed in April of Ms. Joanne Wheatley, who was handed the newly-created role of head of UK institutional client services. Mr. Philip Dawes, head of UK institutional commented that there is a very strong demand across a diverse range of asset classes, including infrastructure debt, multi-asset, multi-factor investing, global sustainability and global equities, and Ms. Wheatley will be vital to helping ensure that Allianz’s client service keeps in step with the company’s growth.
In July, Iain Cowell was hired as Head of Solutions for UK and Ireland to expand this business in Western Europe. The company will likely see several more changes, including marketing and business strategy, with a new CEO joining in a few months.
This may not be an immediate opportunity, but it’s definitely pointing to future opportunities. Note that the company strongly values sponsorships (see below) and forming relationships. Reach out for these types of opportunities as the company seeks to become a household brand and focus on clients and buildings its services.
Relationships: Allianz’s website boasts that the company is a partner of a diverse array of teams, organisations, cultural figures, sporting venues, and educational programs. Their partnerships are intended to help them continually expand their reach into new segments of society: football fans, people with physical impairments, female golfers, students of classical piano, and those who travel by car are just a few of the groups with whom their sports and culture partnerships allow them to communicate.
Because their partnerships are focused on community value as well as business relevance, they forge relationships with partners who support diversity, spread awareness about important social issues, and educate future generations.
Allianz has a goal of becoming a household name and not simply a massive, global brand. Forming strategic relationships is key to doing this. Allianz holds partnerships with several of the world’s top golf venues, players, tournaments, and training programs; the Paralympic Movement; Saracens rugby club and their stadium; football groups (they also host football camps); Formula 1; and they have several of their own stadiums.
Agency Relationships: Allianz works with 18 Feet & Rising and Ogilvy London (since late summer 2014) for its ad account. Gravity Thinking handles social media strategy (since Oct 2014), and MediaCom London handles media (since 2012). In addition, Interbrand has worked on branding and design, and Unique Digital works on digital.
