Review Imminent: Barclays loses CMO as new CEO starts & investment banking is top of mind
This comes just several months after Barclays lost its brand and marketing chief David Wheldon to RBS, putting Barclays in a very vulnerable situation. Mr. Andy Brent, Barclays Bank chief customer and marketing officer, may take her place, but if not will still be a key marketing decision maker at the bank, so reach out.
Expect the bank to consider an agency review as early as January and as late as April 2016 and reach out using the prospecting points below.
Subject: Digital, Media, TV, B2C, Struggle, Banking.
Company: Barclays is an international financial services provider engaged in personal banking, credit cards, corporate and investment banking and wealth management
Opportunity (e-focus on its investment arm in mid-Oct. with the hire of former JP Morgan boss James (Jes) Staley as the new chief executive before the end of the year.
It looks like we were right on the money as the bank promoted Mr. Mike Bagguley from head of macro to the new chief operating officer of the investment banking unit after the bank had moved away from this realm to focus on retail banking before now. He will report to Mr. Tom King, the investment bank's chief executive, and be responsible for focusing on client relationships and the investment arms' services ROI, rather than focus on several markets at a time.
This move is a direct intent to re-position the bank after struggling to gain profit and a major disagreement between board members about the current trajectory of the business. We suspect that media buying and planning may be up for review soon. The initial deal struck between Barclays and Maxus back in 2011 was for three years, but another review has not yet taken place.
The media review that began in 2011 was initiated by former Barclays' CEO, Bob Diamond; with a new CEO coming on board soon, we think a media review is imminent. The new CEO may also seek to hire a marketing chief to assist with developing a new company strategy. Start prepping your dialogue in an approach as we expect changes to Barclays' agency roster as early as January and as late as March 2016.
DM Breakdown: Mr. Staley's hire is the fourth major European bank to switch CEOs this year. (Other bank CEO shifts include Deutsche Bank)
In addition to this, Ms. Karen Penney, interim head of marketing, International Banking is slated to leave this coming October, but we are unsure who will fill that role afterward.
Mr. Tim Hulbert was appointed as interim MD, head of brand, insight & sponsorship at Barclays in April, likely filling the role of Mr. David Wheldon, recently appointed as the new COO, joining from bank of America Merrill Lynch.
Agency Relationships: Barclays works with the following:
- Iris Worldwide (since December 2014) for creative
- BBH for creative (since 2013) and CRM (since March 2015)
- Reading Room for digital creative
- iCrossing UK (for natural search marketing) for digital
- Maxus Global HQ for international media planning and buying (since 2013)
- Havas Sports & Entertainment (its global lead sponsorship agency) for sponsorship, and
- Red Consultancy for PR support.
Media Spend: Barclays spent £33.6m in total measured media during 2014, a small 1% decline from 2013 spend, according to Nielsen. TV was the only category that saw an increase and it was substantial (£16.3m to £23.9m). Internet and Outdoor spend shrank the most.
