Millennial Media, Agency Opps: Subway continues expansion, plans summer marketing spark

Company: Subway is the popular US-based sandwich chain.
Opportunity: Looking to grow from 2,300 UK and Ireland stores to 3,000 by 2020, the vulnerable account will roll out a new minimalist logo early this year. as part of a global image refresh, 'Keep Discovering', unveiled last June.
This follows the appointment of Sacha Clark to country marketing director UK & I last summer.
Soon after, Subway rolled out its TV, OOH, cinema, digital, press and VOD festive marketing campaign. The campaign, created by MediaCom has handled the account since 2005, there's likely to be more changes by Q2 this year to agencies.
Expect campaigns to roll out this H1; targeting millennials with family nostalgia ahead of summer. Note that subway MediaCom Edinburgh handles the account.
Media Spend: H1 2016, the company spent £11.5m, with nearly £4m on outdoor and another £4m on TV. This was significantly higher than what Subway spent during the same period last year, reaching £7m. Subway spent a total of £13m in 2015.
Digital Breakdown: Per Pathmatics, last year, Subway has spent over £1.3m on digital presence, with the majority going towards video ads, that generated over 24m impressions. All were placed site direct on top publishing sites: youtube.com, news.yahoo.com, mirror.co.uk and deviantart.com.
This is a drastic increase from 2015, when only £173k was spent, again predominantly on video adverts, to gain over 7m impressions. Both years, saw spending spikes in H1.
Competitors: Biggest direct rival is Quiznos, but Papa John's are in the same court when it comes to the amount of advertising and target consumer group.
