PPC, Programmatic Opps: Eurostar concludes media review, while digital becomes priority

Update (14 Jul): Eurostar has expanded its relationship with Dentsu-Aegis Network, awarding the marcomm’s company with its media planning and buying, PPC, programmatic and data transformation business for the UK, France, US and Canada, following a review announced earlier this year. This ads to the current SEO work handled by Dentsu-Aegis Network's 360i. This will be affective from Aug. 2015.

Company: Eurostar Group is the only high speed train that directly links the UK to France and Belgium via the Channel Tunnel.

Opportunity (called a review of its £6 million media planning and buying account. This comes as Eurostar hopes to expand its European presence, particularly in France and Belgium. The appointed media agency will oversee these countries as well as the UK for a five year term.

Head of Marketing and Brand Lionel Benbassat has voiced the company's opportunity to better tackle digital and personalisation activity. Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO has handled the creative account since 2012 and will not be affected by this review.

The company's fleet today consists of a total of 27 trains running between the UK and France and Belgium, as well as 3 used on domestic services in France. These trains are “getting a makeover” this year “with the first refurbished train joining the fleet this year,” according to a company statement. These new designs are created by world-famous Italian design house Pininfarina and are in addition to 17 brand new e320 trains from Siemens, which will have 20% more seats, expected to be available by the end of this year. 

Last year sales revenues increased to £867 million with a 4% increase in 2014 business travel year-over-year (YoY). There was also YoY growth of 3% in traveller numbers, with operating profit of £55 million, up by 2% year-on-year.

Media Spend: Spent just a tad bit less last year, according to Nielsen, totalling £2.27 million compared to £3.71 million in 2013. TV had the vast amount of the spending.

Digital Breakdown: Moat reports that Eurostar has run 89 standard display ads so far this year with 426 publishers, 31% of which were published directly, as opposed to through an ad exchange or server. Last year the company's peak digital spending was in June, obviously an effort to appeal to those interested in a summer holiday.
