Digital Opps: Zagg appoints tech PR as display ads increase

Company: Zagg, a publicly traded technology company based in Salt Lake City, Utah, best known for its line of protective covering for consumer electronics (InvisibleShield), along with hand-held devices and accessories.
Opportunity: Appointed UK tech PR firm Brown Betty PR to focus on the company’s portfolio of portable tech, including its audio, visual and peripheral catalogue. This follows Zagg’s £70.5m purchase of external mobile devices product maker Mophie, as well as disappointing sales in Q4 that were blamed on audio and portable power products and slowed demand in tablet accessories.
The acquisition marked a pivotal move for the company in its market race with rival Apple, but it still struggles to take hold of the market. The company hopes to drive revenue growth and increase profitably by highlighting the strengths of both organisations to strengthen product development, improve brand presence, and expand distribution. Sellers have an opportunity to go after significant digital spend, as Zagg increased last year’s presence by 7x.

Digital Breakdown: Moat reports that Zagg ran 247 display ads on 2,827 publishers last year, with 4% mobile presence. Top ad destinations included macworld.com, youtube.com, macrumors.com and imore.com, almost all placed site direct versus programmatically. The company also ran 46 high impact ads and six video ads. This is well up compared to 2014, when 58 display ads were run on 408 publishers.
Marketplace: Britain has created Britain has created over 45,000 technology companies over the past five years, more than double the overall rate of businesses creation. However, profits are dropping as competition heats up. According to Tech City, venture capital investment into Britain's technology companies hit a record high with more than £1.5 billion raised in the first 6 months of 2015. As tech start ups are popping up at an alarming rate and tech giants are swallowing competition, now more than ever branding and strong digital/web presence are crucial.
Competitors: Include Forward Industries Inc., and Apple Inc., especially after it forged a partnership with rival Belkin, in addition to its direct competition with Mophie over smartphone battery cases and battery packs.
