Campaign Imminent: Vodafone taps Ogilvy & Mather and shifts strategy
Subject: TV, Outdoor, Digital, Social, Sponsorship, H1 Targets, Q3, Q4
Update (17 Jan): Following a review, MEC 's bespoke client team based in London, Team Red. Sellers should be all over imminent H1 spending, but start planning now for a bigger H2 push.
Look for TV, outdoor and digital in particular, while sponsorship and experiential will be a bigger focus to combat rival EE.
The following was originally published on 04 November 2016
Opportunity: WPP's Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R.
Taking on rivals MEC could be on the defence next.
While H2 had historically been the company's biggest spending period, this year's H1 saw a huge jump in digital spend. Sellers have up to £20m of revenue per quarter, so stay at it until you win some. Along with digital, TV, outdoor and press take up a large amount of media pounds. Vodafone was a top desktop ad spender in the UK this summer.
Media Spend: Spent £107m last year, with the largest amounts in press, outdoor and TV. The first half of 2016, Nielsen shows the brand spending £73m, with a huge increase in digital spend.
Experience: Persianis joined in April and was previously CEO of Vodafon Greece. He's held commercial and business roles with P&G, LEK consulting, and PepsiCo.
Digital Breakdown: As of Pathmatics, Vodafone was the second highest desktop advertiser this year after significantly decreasing its own spend year-over-year. The decline was reverse in September, when Vodafone increase video ad spend to £1.6m, up from £1.3m in 2015, in the first three quarters of the year, plus October.
The company has spent £22m so far on desktop, mobile and video, which is up slightly from £21m during the same period last year. Site-direct is its forte, with indirect channels making up less than half of all spend and the majority of both desktop and mobile. Video had 43% of spend go through DSPs, however, including Videology and TubeMogul. Top destinations have included ebay.co.uk, youtube.com, amazon.co.uk, news.yahoo.com, telegraph.co.uk and msn.com.
