Digital, ATL Opps: E.ON consolidates media, hands Vizeum UK account with plans to up spending

Opportunity: E.ON, now focused on renewables, distribution networks, and customer solutions, has consolidated its global media account into Dentsu Aegis Network, giving Vizeum the UK business.

E.ON plans to spend more this year with the UK account expected to be worth £10m, compared to £8m in 2013 and £4.3m in 2014. With digital advertising at the forefront of its advertising strategy, E.ON also favours TV, outdoor, radio and press advertising.

New Company: E.ON’s newly created publicly listed company, Uniper, that specialises in power generation, global energy trading, exploration and production, began operations on 1 January. Uniper, which stands for “unique performance,” sees Klaus Schäfer as its CEO and a chief commercial officer (CCO), who will be responsible for all marketing activities and for global energy trading, was recently added to the team.
Market Turbulence: With the end of 2015 marking a five year low on wholesale gas and energy prices, the UK's decreased its gas prices by 5.1% to stay ahead of the game.
Digital Breakdown: The energy company rolled out 73 display ads on 946 publishers last year (<1% mobile). Top ad destinations included sfgate.com, theguardian.com, coolmath-games.com, ownersdirect.co.uk, mysupermarket.co.uk and belfasttelegraph.co.uk (only 3% were placed site direct versus programmatically). E.ON also ran 39 high impact ads and two video ads. Most of this activity was weighted towards the first quarter, but mobile and video showed up later in the year in Q4.
For comparison, in 2014, E.ON ran 103 display, 21 high impact ads on 1,487 publishers (1% site direct).
