UPS beats profit, misses sales expectations, following new global marketer start

Company: United Parcel Service (UPS), a global leader in logistics, offering a broad range of solutions including the transportation of packages and freight; the facilitation of international trade, and the deployment of advanced technology to more efficiently manage the world of business.

Opportunity: Just four months following UPS’ plans to intensify the company's focus on growth and commercial strategies and the appointment of a new global marketer, the global logistics leader beat profit expectations, but missed on sales in the first quarter.

Operating profit increased 11% with international profit up 14% year-over-year.  Total international revenue increased 2.4% but both U.S. and International package sales fell short of what was expected.  Total company shipments increased 2.8% to 1.1 billion packages, led by European export growth of 9.4%.  

Export shipments jumped 6.7% led by European growth of 9.4%. In Europe, UPS Export volume has grown at an annual rate of approximately 9% over the past 10 years. The stock has fallen 12% from this time last year. (research here)

Recent Decision Makers: Inannounced several senior leadership changes as the company hoped to enhance management focus on strategic growth and organizational effectiveness.

This included the promotion of Teresa Finley from treasurer and VP of corporate finance to SVP of global marketing. Reporting to UPS Chief Commercial Officer Alan Gershenhorn, Ms Finley will oversee marketing, advanced analytics, UPS Capital and UPS intellectual property management.

In addition, Corporate Controller Richard Peretz, was promoted to take an expanded role in Finance and Accounting, reporting to Kuehn. Peretz will serve as Corporate Controller for all UPS business units, and accept a new role as Corporate Treasurer.
Also, Ed Buckley was named president of communications, responsible for UPS Global Corporate Brand and Communications Management and digital and small customer strategies.

Media Spend: Spent £0.7 million in total measured media last yea, according to Nielsen, almost 46% below 2013 spending of £1.28m.

In 2012, UPS spent £7.42 million in media. Mote reports that UPS published 231 standard display ads with 4,442 publishers so far this year, 1% of which were on mobile.

Of these, 39% were published directly through the publisher, rather than through an ad exchange. 

Last year, UPS spent the most during mid-January and late October, with sports, finance and local paper publishers.
