Focus on travel saving high street slump at WH Smith

Opportunity: High street sales are April.
Travel-based stores are still leading the way, as the amount of travellers keeps growing and the retailer cured consumers' sweet teeth and matched demand for travel essentials and digital accessories. They are seeing a positive reaction to the expansion of the Lindt and Thorntons boxed chocolates, new travel ranges as well as a refreshment of the new Food to Go offer. This focus on profit rather than high street sales is benefiting the retailer and is a trend that will continue as they expect full-year results to see pre-tax profit up 6.7% to £119.5 million.
The retailer sees many opportunities for growth this year and plans to invest in new space in Travel and to launch 25 new units in the UK this year, including 4 in air, 11 in hospitals, and 10 in rail. (research here)
Historical Struggle: Total group sales were up 1% but LFL were flat in the most recent quarter, a similar trend to what was reported during the six months to 28th February, which saw flat group total sales and LFL down 2%. These was blamed on challenges in the books market.
Media Spend: The company spent £4.66 million in total measured media last year, which was about the same as 2013 media spending, according to Nielsen.
