Q1 Planning Opps: Aveda appeals to men, shifts from TV and print to digital, social

Opportunity: To enter its key planning period in Q1 on the tails of its largest spending period. Sellers- if you missed a chance at this year's revenue, make sure you don't miss planning for next years. 

A CoolBrand 2016/17 hair care category winner, Aveda is still trying to strengthen its appeal among a younger audience and among more men. It's long term strategy to achieve this entails enhancing digital and social media strategies and driving new product packaging to resonate with consumers. This shift has led to an overall decline in media spend as Aveda and Estee Lauder pulls away from TV and print. Other areas of spend include cause marketing and sampling.

Early this year, Estee opened Aveda barber shops in London to gain traction within the £1m male grooming category. OMD continues to handle media planning and buying, with creative handled in-house.

Additional Information

Media Spend: Spent £1.2m last year, mostly in Q4. Most of this was in press, but £794k was spent on TV during the second half of the year. Aveda spent just £49k in H1 this year.

Digital Breakdown: Aveda spent £162k in the year to 14th November last year on digital, according to Pathmatics. This declined to just £46k this year, with 76% on desktop, 24% on mobile/tablet destinations. Nearly all spend share was direct with top sites including boots.com, netdoctor.co.uk and webmd.com.

Note that this year's key spending took place in Q3, while last year's big push was in Q1. 

Target Audience: Shifting from just Gen-X to include older millennials and males.
