Q3 Campaign Imminent: Staples taps Havas Media Manchester

Opportunity: The former Havas Media Manchester to its media planning and buying business, following a competitive pitch. The agency will work on a £3m budget covering national, local and in-store campaigns here.
Last year, ahead of the busy gifting season, Staples positioned itself as “the destination for everything customers need to pack and ship gifts seven days a week during the busy holiday season,” according to Chairman and CEO Ron Sargent.
Staples faces price matching challenges in a competitive marketplace across Europe, which it will be working on in addition to driving reward, next-day delivery and end-to-end strategies for the B2B customer.
Look for continued spending in digital and omni-channel areas as Staples looks to evolve from paper based to digital based marketing. Q3 is its biggest spending period, so a campaign or two are imminent sellers.

Media Spend: Spent £6m last year, down from £8m in 2014. These annual totals, tracked by Nielsen, tally up media spend across TV, radio, press, door drop, direct mail and digital.
Digital Breakdown: Per Moat, Staples has run 50 standard display ads with 82 publishers so far this year. Of those, nearly all were published using programmatic. Top destinations have included reddit.com, yahoo.com and windowscentral.com. Staples also ran three video ads, also skewing towards programmatic publishing, on publishers including tickld.com, youtube.com and walesonline.co.uk.
For context, Staples ran 14 standard ads with seven publishers (14% mobile and 3% direct) during the same period last year.
Competitors: Staples’ biggest rival has been Office Depot. Amazon.com is also one.
