Q4 Digital, TV Opps: E-Lites ups digital spend by 20x ahead of key retail period

Company: E-Lites UK, owned by Japan Tobacco after the acquisition of UK-based e-cig vendor Zandera was acquired.
Opportunity: Since returning to TV late last year as part of its New Year campaign, the brand has increased its display ad spend by 20-fold year-on-year, according to Pathmatics. E-Lites went from 9.8m (Jan. to Sept. 2015) to 240m impressions year-to-date after investing £0.9m on desktop ads (up from £45k). This has made the brand the #3 top advertiser within the hobbies and interests category on Pathmatics year-to-date. However, what's really exciting is that the brand spent 3x as much in last three months of 2015 as it did leading up to October, so expect the same this Q4.
After sharing most of its spend with site-direct publishers last year, E-Lites has preferred a more indirect approach this year (see chart). Top sites this year have included healthline.com, bournemouthecho.co.uk and scotsman.com.
Mobile ads, on the other hand, went from 1.6m impressions (£5k invested with a 50/50 split between site-direct and ad network) last year, to 13m (£369k invested with 96% of its spend share to site-direct publishing) in 2016. Top sites this year included answers.com, theargus.co.uk and bournemouthecho.co.uk.
Target Audience: Over 18s looking to quit smoking but still want the appeal.
Competitors: The e-cigarette market is extremely fragmented with more than 500 vendors and around half based in the USA. Top players are Reynolds American (owner of Lorillard, which acquired blue eCigs in 2012), Imperial Brands, Altria Group, NJOY and British American Tobacco.
