Digital, AdTech Opps: Church & Dwight increases full year marketing, review imminent?

Subject: Digital, Outdoor, TV, Online, Social.

Company: Church & Dwight UK Ltd (C&D), owner of brands including Oxi Clean, First Response, Batiste Dry Shampoo, Arm & Hammer and Nair.

Opportunity: The company upped Q2 2016 marketing spend by nearly four per cent on the heels of promoting former EU boss Ms. Britta Bomhard to EVP and CMO in January. Since then, the company has appointed two new brand managers Charlie Nuvoletta and Holly Dove.

C&D plans to increase full year marketing expectation by 10 basis points to 12.4%, according to CEO Matthew Farrell's announcement during the Q2 earnings call. BATISTE continues to be the core driver in the UK market, so this should be your main target.

While C&D already spends more than 20% of its media budget on digital, rival Colgate-Palmolive plans to increase spend here from 13% to 25% by 2017. C&D will likely mirror this move in order to stay ahead in share of voice, as it is currently the eighth top CPG advertiser in the UK, according to Pathmatics.

The FMCG giant has already increased video, mobile and desktop advertising in the last six months, favouring adtech more than prior years. Maxus Global has handled media for more than a decade, so agencies should be looking for an opening.

Additional Information

Media Spend: Spent more than £4m last year, down 16% from 2013. TV, press and digital are core pillars with Q3 taking the lead.

Digital Breakdown: In the last 12 months, with most activity taking place in 2016, C&D has run 33 unique desktop creatives spending $259k. These ads, 14% running site-direct, generated 28.2m impressions during this time. The rest of the ads published using exchange (34%), an ad network (24%) and SSP (21%). Only seven per cent went through a trading desk. Top sites included, and, according to Pathmatics.

For mobile and tablet, C&D ran 21 unique creatives and spent $14.6k. These generated 2.7m impressions, 76% of which published via the SSP Rubicon Project. As for video, the company spent $77k and ran six uniques that generated 5.8m impressions. Of those, 96% ran using the DSP Videology with top destinations including, and
