Digital, Direct Marketing Opps: Penguin Random House hires group marketing director

Subject: Direct, Traditional, OOH, Outdoor, Digital, Social, Offline.

Company: Penguin Random House (PRH - Winmo) is one of the largest book publishers in the world, publishing authors from all genres.

Opportunity: Following several marketing shifts and an increased focus on digital last year, PRH has hired former Universal Pictures digital strategy head Albert Hogan to head up the publisher’s group marketing efforts in the newly created role of director, group marketing and audiences.

Mr Hogan will head up PRH’s group marketing and audiences team in devising new marketing strategies that will attract a larger audience for consumer brands Penguin, Puffin and Ladybird, and interest brands Dead Good and The Happy Foodie. In addition, the group will welcome Caroline Maddison as head of digital marketing for Puffin & Ladybird from 7 March.

PRH is hoping to use new digital and marketing expertise to build stronger direct relationships with its readers, which range from age 8 to 68/ Therefore accurate targeting is a priority. CEO Tom Weldon announced last March that the brand would become an “entirely new kind of publisher,” which has begun with the launch of new consumer and corporate sites last month and the complete overhaul of its brand and group marketing teams. Sellers should go after available experiential, digital, mobile and above-the-line opportunities likely to be spread our across the year.

Additional Information

Experience: Reporting to Group Director of Consumer and Digital Development Hannah Telfer, Mr Hogan joins after nearly four years as Universal Picture’s head of digital strategy. During that time, he spearheaded up to 35 campaigns, working directly with its media agency MediaCom. Known for running campaigns for major films such as  ”Jurassic World”, “Despicable Me”, “The Theory of Everything” and “Fifty Shades of Grey”, Mr Hogan was also in various global digital marketing roles at EMI and Disney.

Media Spend: Penguin Books has put the majority of its ad budget into outdoor advertising, with Random House splitting the majority between outdoor and TV. Combined, the two brands spend roughly £2.5m on media annually. Keep in mind that Q3 and Q1 have historically been larger spending periods.

Other Executive Shifts: In Oct. PRH hired its first ever marketing director for the children's arm, Vanessa Jedrej (née Godden). Shortly after, Ms. Sarah Ridley took on a senior marketing manager role for Cornerstone and Ms. Chloe Healy was promoted to head of marketing for the vintage arm.

Mr Hogan will oversee the entire group marketing and audiences team consisting of Ms Maddison, Emma Bagshaw, head of group marketing; Claire Wilshaw, audience development director of Penguin; Gina Manns, digital design director; and Lynsey Dalladay, head of marketing, interest brands.

Agency RosterBeatrix Potter’s entry into the world. The agency will work on various events and campaigns for the rest of 2016.
