Digital, Social Opps: Paramount Pictures gives head marketer a digital role

Opportunity: Barnaby Hands began his role this month as the new director of digital marketing in the UK and Ireland, suggesting the company’s intentional push to master its digital growth in the region. His main responsibilities will be to manage the digital transactional business with key EST and VOD customers, reporting directly into the SVP Transactional Marketing (LA). He’ll also work directly with the EMEA Universal, PPUK and digital sales team to devise a digital marketing strategy that incorporates social media.

This digital focus comes in after Paramount revamped its international marketing strategy late last year, which led the appointment of Worldwide Marketing Chief, Home Entertainment & Theatrical Megan Colligan, among others (see below).

Experience: Mr Hands has been with Paramount Pictures since 1999, most recently as the head of marketing for all film and TV content for Paramount in the UK and Ireland. He oversaw B2C and B2B communications plans, including social media, media planning, creative, retail marketing and consumer exhibitions. Prior to that role, he was a marketing controller for new releases on TV and digital platforms, after holding several other marketing roles. Prior to Paramount, he was with Universal and Dreamworks as a brand manager.

Digital Breakdown: Moat reports that Paramount Pictures has run 89 standard display, 14 high impact and 35 video ads in the last year. These ran with 165 UK publishers, 9% of which were mobile, and mostly through programmatic (43% ran directly). Most of the display activity took place in Sept. and Oct. last year on music publishers, while mobile was the main focus of June this year on magazine and lifestyle publishers. Video ads ran in Feb. and June this year on music, games, media and technology publishers.

Sept., Megan Colligan was promoted from president of domestic marketing and distribution to worldwide marketing chief overseeing home entertainment and theatrical, succeeding Josh Greenstein (joined Sony). Erik Counter was promoted to president of worldwide creative advertising and Steve Siskind to president of domestic marketing. 

In Oct., Paramount Pictures promoted Nic Crawley to president, international marketing and distribution and Mark Viane to co-president, international marketing and distribution to oversee all international marketing and distribution. Anthony Marcoly, who has served as president of Paramount Pictures International since 2011, left the company.

Media Spend: It is looking like Paramount has refocused some of its traditional marketing budget as they much less last year in Nielsen-tracked media spend. Last year they exited from outdoor with led to spending 81% less than 2013 which was £3.5m. This is most likely gone towards digital, mobile and video ads, in addition to event marketing, SEO and PPC.
