Sponsorship, Paid Media: Brother UK names head of marketing to streamline efforts

Company: Brother UK supplies and supports Brother Group’s entire range of technology products and services to individuals and businesses.

Opportunity: Brother UK has promoted its very own Mr. Mike Anderson to head of marketing, putting him in charge of a 25-person marketing team. He’ll spearhead all marketing activities, including advertising, corporate communications, digital, events, PR and mobile.

His take on what is most important is to ensure bottom line growth by streamlining all marketing activity with the business strategy and strengthening customer and partner relationships. Expect the roll out of major national and channel media campaigns, spanning paid and non-paid media, events, digital, communications and mobile.

The company just finished the acquired Domino Printing Sciences portfolio. The acquisition supports Brother Group’s global expansion efforts and strengthens its presence in the UK, particularly within the digital printing sector. 

Experience: Honing more than 13 years of experience in traditional and digital marketing, and working for Cheetham Bell, MediaCom and Hewlett-Packard, Mr. Anderson succeeds James Lawton-Hill, who left earlier this year to join Optionis. Mr. Anderson was most recently Brother UK’s market development manager and has been with the company for the last five years.  

Sponsorship: Brother UK is the official imaging solutions partner for the international Six Day cycling event. The London event, taking place from the 18-23 of October, follows a deal with the Aviva Women’s Cycling Tour as the Official Printing Partner during the summer. Managing Director Phil Jones says the upcoming sponsorship deal will provide Brother UK with “trackside advertising at the 6,000-capacity venue, London's Lee Valley VeloPark, where Eurosport will be broadcasting the event.”

Look out for future sponsorship opportunities within the sports arena as the company wants to grow its national presence. 

Digital Breakdown: Moat UK reports that Brother UK has run 53 standard and one video ad(s) this year, with 610 publishers.

Of those, 73% ran publisher-direct, as opposed to programmatic. Last year shows the same story, with a little less programmatic activity. 

Key publishing activity took place in January (Brother UK’s Q3), mostly on home & garden and news publishers including and The video ad ran on YouTube in late May.

Media Spend: Last year, Brother spent a total of £1.34m, an increase of 16% from 2013, according to Nielsen. Key spending periods have historically been in Q2 and Q4 (Brother UK’s fiscal year Q4 and Q2) with a majority going towards TV, outdoor, press and radio. They’ve also spent in print, cinema

The digital ad above was created as part of a EU-wide ‘Label It’ campaign created this year by long time digital agency partner Code Computerlove. The campaign incorporated two interactive videos and a multi-lingual Umbraco site.

In 2013, Brother appointed The Fresh Group for an event and exhibition programme, two years after appointing TMW to its pan-EU digital ad business to work alongside Code Computerlove.
