Planning for Q2: Pepsico, OMD react to new Mountain Dew threat with big spending

Opportunity: On the heels of OMD is in the process of looking for a new strategy director to handle the Pepsico account.

This person's role will be "elevate" OMD's value as a business in the eyes of its clients, bringing both strategic planning and creative skills.

Pepsi just put its EU digital creative accountvulnerable Lipton's iced tea brand.

Note that the company recently hired former Virgin Media digital marketer Paul Stafford to head up "all things digital" for Pepsi beverage brands. Former SC Johnson marketer Will Robinson also joined this autumn as a Doritos brand manager. 

What does this mean for you, sellers? This means that OMD and Pepsico are planning for 2017 media after spending more in H1 this year than all of 2015. The increase was in digital and TV during Q2, despite the company's largest spending period usually in Q4. You should approach now to be part of upcoming Q2 revenue, particularly targeting Quaker, Mountain Dew and Doritos revenue. 

Vice Chairman and CFO Hugh Johnston told shareholders during its Q3 earnings call that Pepsico was making "incremental investments" in the Quaker brands in this region after launching Quaker Super Goodness porridge sachets in the UK this summer. Further investments are being made in marketing/advertising and research and development to accelerate product innovation into 2017. 

Additional Information

Media Spend: According to Nielsen, Pepsico spent £9.1m during the first half of 2016, nearly as much as the £9.7m spent throughout all of 2015. The increase was seen in digital, press and TV. 

Target Audience: Primarily teens and males aged 14-26. Specifically, athletes, gamers and party goers.

Digital Breakdown: Per Pathmatics, Pepsico spent £3m on digital so far this year, mainly on desktop, after a push in Q2 and Q3. This is more than double the £1.4m recorded during the same period last year. Nearly all of its spend this year was used for site-direct publishing. Top desktop sites were youtube.com, imdb.com and twitch.tv.
