Now, Wells & Young's is responsible for brewing, distributing and marketing of Charles Wells' and Young & Co's brands.
Newly appointed CEO Justin Phillimore says this growth could be attributed to increasing beer sales volume, investments in new pub developments and “new products and marketing promotions,” with “particularly effective marketing and vigorous sales” seen from Young's London Stout and Estrella Damm brands.
With similar investments planned for FY2016 and a consumer-centric strategy at bay, sellers should appreciate lots of campaign launches this year. For instance, the “TRY-ATHLON” campaign is currently underway. The company is set to begin strategic planning efforts in March, so reaching out to Mr Wills now will give agencies an advantage in securing long-term marketing pounds.
Experience: Mr Wills joins having served as Cineworld Cinemas’ interim head of marketing for the last nine months. Prior to that, he oversaw Merlin Entertainment’s 14-strong marketing team and was behind a few major repositioning campaigns that looked to target a new core audience. Not only did he help develop a new brand strategy, but he also oversaw advertising, media planning, TV, content, digital social media and experiential activity. Before Merlin, he supported Heineken UK’s digital, social media marketing and brand development for several years.
Media Spend: In 2014, Wells & Young’s showed a 40% increase since 2012, reaching £1.73m in total measured media. The year saw the company spend in cinema for the first time, but backed out of outdoor for the first time since 2012.
Estrella Audience: Many people don’t realise this, but Estrella makes one naturally gluten-free beer, Estrella Damm Daura, which appeals to the growing demand of gluten-free seekers. Otherwise, Estrella distinguishes itself as a lifestyle brand, running event sponsorships, social media, TV and cinema advertising to convey a carefree, personalised and holiday-inspiring message. The brand’s key advertising period is in the summer, targeting an ABC1 male audience of 18-34 year-olds.
Agency Roster: Under the direction of former marketing director Chris Lewis, Wells & Young’s appointed Arena Media to its Estrella Damm account, in addition to handing using Southpaw to develop the Charlie Wells newest brand identity.
