Social, ATL Opps: Hyundai Motor launches digital, social push to humanise brand

Update: Recently launched two campaigns. More recently, a digital and social media push created by Gravity Thinking (above) marketing the beginning of a series of films called 'Driven by Optimism'. Adam Nickson, head of brand strategy and communications at Hyundai Motor UK said the following in regards to the campaign:

"The 'Driven by Optimism' series perfectly reflects our brand ethos - blending the latest technology with the human spirit to challenge convention and keep pushing boundaries. The series shows exactly what extraordinary feats the human mind can achieve and using our three volunteers we truly show the power of positivity."

 A few weeks prior, The Brooklyn Brothers led an integrated marketing push, a one-of-a-kind immersive fan experience for UEFA Euro 2016. Still no sign of the digital, OOH, video and social push expected for Q3 promoting its new hybrid electric car Ioniq this September, sellers should still have plenty of revenue to go after in H2. All of the latest brand messaging is just the start of how Hyundai is hoping to target younger demos via experiential concepts.

Opportunity: TheHavas is on media buying.

This move, which shows that the automaker is open to agency approaches despite long standing creative and media relationships, is part of its goal to put digital at the hub of its marketing strategy. Jochen Sengpieh, Hyundai’s European VP of marketing, believes it is “inefficient to have huge agency networks … “. He followed this by saying it is better to have agencies build tailor-made networks and he anticipates a change in the agency world over the next five years, “an explosion of spin-offs”. 

Sellers — look for a move away from traditional media with a more integrated, augmented campaign strategy moving forward. Europe is a large part of its growth strategy and has seen market share double to 3.4% in the last decade with Q1 sales supporting that trend.  In the UK, it has ramped up digital and sports sponsorship marketing.

Media Spend: Spent £15.15m more in total measured media in 2014, according to Nielsen. This was close to 6% more than 2013 spending, when the total declined 28% from 2012. With press, TV, radio and door drop spend slightly increased last year, Hyundai has not spent in cinema since 2012.  The car company increased digital spend by about 30% last year, running on publishers including  bloomberg.com, goodtoknow.co.uk and kbb.com. Executive Shifts: Former Jaguar global marketer David Pugh was named Hyundai UK's new marketing director in September. He succeeded SKODA UK‘s new head of marketing. The company named Hyung Cheong Kim as the new president and CEO of Hyundai Europe, making him the boss of UK President and CEO Tony Whitehorn. 

Competition: Hyundai markets itself as a provider of budget cars and luxury sedans, appealing to a broad range of consumers and coming in close competition lines with Honda.
