Reports of staff mistreatment and distribution of wealth imbalances have recently plagued the sports retailer. After struggling for the last 12 months, Sports Direct announced it would conduct a review of its working practices and corporate governance, which in turn sparked a 3% boost in share price. The company has also promoted Karen Byers to global head of operations and Sean Nevitt to global head of commercial.
Mobile and TV sellers should take your shots immediately as Q4 is their biggest spending period which rolls into its Q1. Appeal to sporting enthusiasts, athletes and families with increased digital and integrated focuses. Arena Media handles media planning and buying, but we wouldn't be surprised in future changes.
For the time being, Sports Direct is looking to steady its infrastructure for share holder appeal, but agency shifts could start as early as a few months, beginning with PR. Look to be the star player and keep your eyes on this opp throughout this peak spending season. The retailer needs some points on the scoreboard and marketing may just be the way to get them.
Media Spend: In 2015, over £2m was spent on media, with over half going to TV and the rest was spread across press, digital and outdoor. This year has seen a drop in marketing spending due to all the recent PR problems and leadership adjustments.
Digital Breakdown: Per Pathmatics, throughout 2015, Sports Direct spent £64k on mobile and tablet ads that gained 3.8m impressions. During this time, £1.3k was put towards desktop adverts. Pathmatics is showing no data for 2016 thus far.
