Millennial Women Media Opps: Nike targets women with new content

Subject: Digital, Mobile, eCommerce, Sponsorship.

Company: Nike

Opportunity: With the goal of reaching Millennial women (research here), Nike has recognised this and is doing a content marketing venture via YouTube in a new video series called “Margot vs. Lily”. Each of the eight episodes will begin airing in February every week. Nike discovered that this type of engagement with consumers would be successful via “countless consumer conversations” Social media has also been a big push in the last year as the company seeks to reach women.

The new series is part of Nike’s ”Better for it’ campaign, which has run since last April, and is part of Nike’s effort to turn its womenswear portfolio into an £8bn business by the end of 2017. Currently just 20% of the company's revenue comes from womenswear. Therefore, female focused sellers should be all over Nike since it’s investing much more in growing the business.

Further Insight

Media Spend: Nike's media spend doubled year-over-year for FY14, from £2.5m in FY13, to £4.4m in FY14. Highest spend was in TV, press and cinema, followed by outdoor and online.

Digital Breakdown: Nike has increased its digital display activity by about 10% year-over-year and its high impact ads by nearly 275%, while quadrupling mobile activity and adding video (21 ads) to the mix, according to Moat UK. Key publishers have been sports, news and arts/entertainment, such as golfdigest.com, mensfitness.com and telegraph.co.uk.

Agency Roster: The company works with Dare in May. We don’t know if any agencies were appointed yet.

Decision Makers on the Move: A month after Nike in Oct), having previously held the same title for the Italy region.
