Creative Review Imminent (score 99): Deliveroo hires Amazon marketer to head UK marketing

Company: Deliveroo, technology company focused on marketing, selling and delivering restaurant meals to the household or office.

Update (27 Jan.): After appointing a PR agency, reviewing media requirements and bringing some media in-house (details below), Deliveroo has appointed its first UK marketing director. Former Amazon Prime Now head marketer Jamie Swango will oversee consumer, restaurant and rider marketing in the UK and Ireland.

The Uber, Amazon and Just Eat rival grew seven-fold last year in its third year as a company, so look for increased investments in marketing and advertising to continue growth pace. While we had not added the account to the VAI before now, we have now added Deliveroo as a Review Imminent and suggest agencies approach very soon with expectations of winning the business as early as April.

The company appointed Hope&Glory to lead PR in the UK this month.

Experience: Ms Swango was leading a team at Prime Now for the last 1.8 years. She implemented brand awareness, scaling and optimising digital and ATL acquisition channels, while leading seasonal planning efforts. Prior to this role, she was a senior manager for Amazon Fashion. She joined Amazon from Quidsi and has previously worked for Hermès and Schwartz & Benjamin.

Opportunity: After only Havas PR UK have ended their relationship and the company is now looking for a new retained consumer PR agency for national and regional support. A corporate communications agency will also be chosen in the coming months.

This comes as Thea Rogers, former chief of staff at HM Treasury, joins as Deliveroo's new PR chief.  Deliveroo secured £211m in funding last summer after reviewing its media planning and buying requirements. Soon after the company launched its new brand and logo design, created by DesignStudio, in hopes to raise its brand profile.

Now, the company is hiring an in-house media planner to ensure "a smooth and effective running of all UK&IE wide advertising, from agency brief to delivery of final artwork," according to the job post. This person will also have budget control, so make sure you stay tuned to find out who takes the spot.

Sellers should look for revenue tied to outdoor, digital and social. Start with planning ahead of H2, when digital spending skyrocketed last year.

Additional Information

Competitors: Take Eat Easy and Just Eat are at the top of Deliveroo's rivals list. Newer courier services including Jinn, Gousto, Pronto and more recently UberEats.

Digital Breakdown: Deliveroo spent £783k on digital channels last year, according to Pathmatics. This was up from just £325 spent during all of 2015. Last year's investment led to 74m impressions with the majority of activity taking place in the back half of the year. Of the monthly spend, 50% of activity was video advertisements, 45% desktop and 5% mobile.

Spend share saw 88% go to direct publishers and 11% go to ad networks AdSense, Smaato, AdCash and Curse Network. Those indirect sources made up 69% of impression share, leaving just 30% to direct publishers.
