Future Opp: TalkTalk CEO shake-up could spark strategy shifts (Score 23)


Telecom company, TalkTalk, is losing seven-year CEO Dido Harding in May. Current MD Tristia Harrison will take over, which may be the start of longer term agency opps. 

Ms Harding's departure comes after revenues fell from £459m in 2015 to £435m late last year. She was also at the helm when hackers attacked TalkTalk's website which resulted in a £400k fine for poor website security and last year. Leadership is convinced this revenue drop is short-term.  Once an overall agenda is nailed down and marketing is settled, probably by H2, agencies should check back in with the telecom giant. 

Sellers should get in touch as the company is currently planning for Q4 peaks. Nielsen data shows that TalkTalk spent over £5 million in Q4 of 2015. Like all telecom companies, TalkTalk targets millennials and kids, those who watch more TV. CHI & Partners covers creative.

Media Spend: In H1 2016, TalkTalk spent £9.2m on omnichannel outlets where door drop, direct mail, outdoor and TV gaining the most, while a smaller portion was spread across press, radio and digital. 

Digital Breakdown: Per Pathmatics, last year, TalkTalk spent over £6.6m on desktop, video and mobile ads which generated over one billion impressions. Of those, 63% were placed site direct and top publishing sites included youtube.com, ebay.co.uk and gumtree.com.

This is similar to 2015 when £10.6m was spent on desktop adverts to gain close to 3 billion impressions. During this time, over 50 per cent were placed programmatically through DSP (29%) and ad network (25%).
