Review Imminent?: CooperVision bolsters customer marketing, plans for boost in 2017
Company: CooperVision is a global manufacturer of soft contact lenses and related products for correcting vision.
Opportunity: Following several marketing hires in late 2015 and in the first half of 2016, James Fenn has been promoted to director of global customer marketing. This is part of CooperVision's ploy to boost customer engagement among a younger demographic. Copper Companies CEO Bob Weiss told shareholders in late 2016 that the company would continue to invest in marketing throughout 2017 "in excess of $10 million" to boost top line growth. These expenses grew 14% in fiscal 2016 due to marketing expansions supporting product portfolios.
Wimno has confirmed that CooperVision continues to work with integrated creative agency Five by Five, a relationship active since 2000. The agency mostly provides experiential support for healthcare events and online branding for patients, while CooperVision has brought on Pure Events for specific events in the last few years. The company otherwise invests in sponsorship ('global gold sponsor' of Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) until end of 2019).
Experience: Mr Fenn was promoted from director of international European accounts, a role he had held since 2013. Prior to that he handled Eu business development and was previously marketing manager for the UK and Ireland. He also served as CIBA VISION's brand and channel head for more than three years.
Target Audience: Between the massive Baby Boomer generation and up and coming young adults, the contact lens market still has a large demand. The UK market was worth £240m in 2013, according to the Association of Contact Lens Manufacturers, and is expected to grow 9.6% in 2014-15. There are approx. 3.7mn contact lens wearers in the UK, representing 9% of adults aged 15-64 years.
Revenue of the online glasses and contact lens retailing industry is expected to grow at a rate of 16.6% over the next five years, reaching 192.5m.
