Opportunity: Hired Anne Kirk as marketing director, effective immediately, after she served on an interim basis since September. She will oversee marketing, PR, products, digital, pricing and analytics. Next year's focus will be on building the brand, customer relations and digital presence, according to a statement by Kirk.
Kirk joined the insurance company right after it reported that profits had declined by 26% to £16.1m for 2015. The group is now investing in its high street branches and closing 130 branches nationwide by the middle of 2017 as part of a restructure.

Experience: Kirk has more than two decades of experience in marketing and customer communications roles, most recently at Aviva's life insurance business as customer director. She was with Aviva since 2008 in various marketing roles before leaving in early 2015 to join Towthorpe Associates as a managing partner. She left after a year to join Swinton.
Media Spend: Spent £21m last year, mostly in Q1. Top channels were direct mail and TV. The first half of 2016 saw a decline year-on-year with only £6.7m spent, down from £15.8m spend during the same period the year before.
Digital Breakdown: Swinton has spent £148k on digital ads this year, according to Pathmatics. This is up from the £64k recorded in 2015. Things really ramped up in Q3 this year with desktop ads carrying the majority of monthly spend and impressions. Of the 29m impressions this year, the Xaxis trading desk accounted for 84%, while direct was 12% and the exchange AppNexus was 4%.
