Opportunity: As 15-year CEO Ronan Dunne departs, O2 has appointed current CFO Mark Evans as Tefonica's UK boss from the end of July.
The European Commission recently stopped CK Hutchison's plan to acquire O2 for £10.25bn and merge with Three UK this past May. Now, Telefonica plans to retain the UK business and move forward with a new business strategy. The new boss could be the beginning of a marketing team overhaul since current head marketer Nina Bibby has held the role for nearly four years, beyond the average 2-3 year tenure. Agencies should be on alert.
Sellers, note O2's increase in digital spending and preference for outdoor, TV and press spending, Sponsorship is also a core part of its marketing strategy. Havas Media UK handles the media account.
Media Spend: Spent £88.4m in measured media including TV, press, cinema, digital, outdoor and radio, according to Nielsen. Outdoor, press and TV saw the majority with Q3 leading in total spent per quarter.
Digital Breakdown: So far this year, according to Moat, O2 has run 323 standard display ads with 1,236 publishers (24% of which have been mobile). Of those ads run, 18% were published site-direct versus programmaically and top destinations overall were recombu.com, theo2.co.uk and broadbandchoices.co.uk. O2 also ran 499 high impacts and 32 video ads (10% published site-direct). Top video ad destinations have included givemesport.com, watchcartoononline.com and goal.com.
The year prior, O2 ran 156 standard display ads with 1,255 publishers (27% mobile). Of those, 30% were published site-direct and top destinations included businesszone.co.uk, businessesforsale.com and iod.com. O2 also ran 554 high impacts and 18 video ads during that time.
