HMV best pick up digital pace if they want to beat Amazon
Subject: Cinema, Press, TV, Digital, Mobile, Online, E-Commerce.
Company: HMV Group, a leading specialist retailer of music, film, games and technology products, with over 120 stores around the UK, offering a wide selection of new release and catalogue titles.
31% Opportunity: At last, they are re-entering the e-commerce world by launching a new online shop, following its fall out two years ago and acquisition by Hilco.
Without being too quick to judge, Chairman Paul McGowan told the Telegraph this could be something to “lift the business.”
In an effort to further compete with rival Amazon, HMV will be offering customers a free digital version of albums purchased, a ploy meant to launch almost one year ago. The group very recently returned to profit and opened six new stores in the UK after almost going out of business in 2013.
Named as Britain’s biggest music seller this year, second behind Amazon, physical according to Kantar. This was led by browsing consumers spending 50% more, giving HMV 16.6% of the market. Granted, they used to own 50% prior to their struggle.
Amazon grew its market share to 23.1% during the same time, while the third place market leader Tesco fell behind at 14.7% compared to 15.1% the year prior. The e-commerce store will sell CDs and games and mimic the site that launched in Ireland last year on a trial basis. It will most likely be led by the recently appointed former Universal Music Group digital manager Ms Caroline Lee, e-commerce product manager since March.
This could either benefit or harm the retailer against Amazon’s market share as consumer are more willing to buy online, but will they trust a newly formed logistics plan and digital platform over the fully established market leader? We shall see!
Regardless, HMV has had virtually zero activity in digital advertising in the two years, according to Mote; so, digital and mobile are definitely areas they need to enter if they want to target Millennials the way Amazon does, who has run 673 standard display ads with 2,787 publishers this month alone!
Media Spend: Spent over 23% more in Nielsen-tracked media spend last year compared to 2013, up to £4.44 million. TV, Press and Cinema were main areas last year with cinema being a new area of focus.
Agency Roster: Has an in-house creative team and works with OMD London previously handled the account.
