Trinity Mirror barters for a major stake in competitor, Daily Express

The discussion has been ongoing between the companies since March, but the process has been a slow one as they seek to compromise on a figure for the sale.

The current price is £100m, but Trinity is ambivalent since Express Newspaper’s (owner of Daily Express) pension deficit sits at £85m.

Trinity Mirror was keen to buy a significant stake in Local World David Montgomery's Local World, but Lord Iliffe, who controls a 21.3% stake, quickly thwarted that endeavour.

This new deal would boost Trinity’s bottom line, which it needs badly in light of the recent fall in print advertising (see below). The deal may not see completion, however, until the end of the year.

Company: Trinity Mirror – Britain's biggest newspaper group, publishing regional papers as well as the national Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and People, and the Scottish Sunday Mail and Daily Record.

Opportunity (30 June): With declining revenues, Trinity Mirror is continuing to cut costs and has announced the efforts will equal £20m in savings when all is said and done, rather than the original target of £10m.

The Group also said that the higher cost-savings target would increase restructuring expenses by £5m to £15m. Savings will partly be a result of job cuts; in May, the company eliminated 27 positions. 14 of these were at its new digital formats arm, which includes Ampp3d.

Other recent developments include a relaunch of The Liverpool Echo with a new design and approach to content, in the biggest shake-up of its 136 year history. The changes are the result of a collection of feedback from readers about the type of content they wanted to see.

Feedback revealed a desire for less crime news, more reporting on things to do in the city, and improved Everton FC coverage.

This may be a good time to approach the Group with strategies for advertising in order to boost revenue and with ideas for growth in digital and print. Agency relationships are older, and there have been many shifts in marketing leadership (see decision makers below), so the company is likely open to suggestions of how to improve marketing strategies.

Struggle: At the beginning of May, the Group reported that first quarter revenues had revenues falling 10% with an 8% fall in publishing and 10% fall in print revenues.

This was blamed on struggle to reverse print advertising decline, which fell 14% in the quarter and the company's choice not to increase the Daily Mirror cover price, leaving circulation revenue to fall 6%.

Four regional daily and Sunday titles, The Birmingham Mail, Liverpool Echo, Daily Post and Sunday Sun, actually saw an increase in monthly circulation.

Media Spend: Last year, Trinity spent close to 50% more in Nielsen-tracked media spend, up to £5.7m from £3.9m in 2013. TV has seen the highest section of this spending the last three years.
