TV, Print Opps: Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday tap George & Dragon

Subject: Print, Digital, Branding, Social, TV, Outdoor.

Company: Daily Mail and Mail On Sunday (Winmo), brands of one of the UK’s largest newspaper publishers DMG Media.

Opportunity: Following a 12% decline in ad revenues from last Christmas to January of this year, the newspaper brand not only increased the cover price for the first time in three years, but they’ve hired on Maxus .

It appears, the newspaper publisher spent much of 2015 deciding their direction and restructuring, including a rebrand of MailOnline to DailyMail.com, plans of possibly launching a TV platform called DailyMailTV, and expecting more local market launches in the US and Australia.

It’s important to note, CEO Mr Martin Morgan is set to retire at the end of 2016, but until then the company is continuing to update for the digital era, while branding themselves as more than just a newspaper publication. Sellers should look for former radio and direct mail ad dollars being freed up for digital. All readers should take note that DMG is entering its planning period ahead of FY17 as we speak, so there is an opportunity for long-term marketing revenue in front of you.

Additional Information

Media Spend: DMG Media spent £520k in total measured media in 2014, according to Nielsen. Last year saw an increase in press with a drop in radio and direct mail.

Incumbent: DMG Media has worked with M&C Saatchi on creative in the past though their most recent work has been in-house.

Digital Breakdown: Moat reports that Daily Mail ran 22 display ads on 344 publishers last year. Top ad destinations, outside of their own included thisismoney.co.uk, linkis.com, and travelsupermarket.com, with almost all being placed site direct versus programmatically. The company also ran 40 high impact ads. For comparison, in 2014 20 display were run on 86 publishers and 21 high impact ads ran mostly across news and personal finance.

Competitors: Include Daily Express, Sunday Express, and The Sun, which also publishes The Times and The Sunday Times.

In June of last year the company ended an 18 year relationship with Maxus control of their media account.
