Close Watch – Score 53: SC Johnson hires first ever global CMO, expect digital focus

Subject: Digital, TV, Internet, Press, Global, Mobile, Video.

Company: SC Johnson, privately-held CPG company known for brands like Pledge, Glade, Ziploc and Windex.

Opportunity: Ms. Ann Mukherjee is to join the global giant “sometime this fall” as the first-ever global chief marketing officer, news that comes five months after SC Johnson awarded Omnicom Group's PHD and 10 months after handing them the media planning account.

She was probably snagged by former colleague and current SC Johnson COO Salman Amin, who joined from PepsiCo in March 2013, in light of Ms. Mukherjee’s apparent reputation for merging traditional and social strategies.

Her hire comes as several UK and Europe marketing roles have moved around as well, including Ms. Clare Andrew joining from Colgate Palmolive in June as head of marketing for the Northern Country Group product line. Mr. David Lane changed his role from director of marketing to sales director in February and last month, Switzerland-based Alistair Morelli became marketing manager for Europe.

The company starts planning for its summer product portfolio in the beginning of the year, so reach out to discuss marketing plans for this planning period around February of next year. SC Johnson spent most of its  media spend during Q2 in TV advertising in the last three years.

Meanwhile, the company has made some interesting, but small, efforts to change its digital strategy this year, but still remains behind the times compared to its competitors. Check for a creative account shift in about 12 months.

Experience: Ms. Mukherjee currently serves as president for global snacks and insights at PepsiCo and is well-known for mixing traditional with social marketing. She will be replaced by CMO Simon Lowden, and SVP for Pepsi and flavours portfolio Seth Kaufman will take over as CMO.

Digital Breakdown: So far this year, SC Johnson has ramped up its digital marketing just slightly (about the same in quantity, while increasing direct publishing this year), showing an irrefutable increase in mobile and video ads. Going from publishing on 2% mobile last year to 18% this year, SC Johnson is clearly aware of how important this avenue is.

Despite SC Johnson’s extra effort this year, they are still almost invisible compared to competitors The Clorox Company and Reckitt Benckiser (RB).

RB outpaces all three in digital display and video but is almost invisible on mobile. The Clorox Company (3% mobile), which uses the most programmatic ad buys, really started ramping up mobile activity in the last few months, while SC Johnson has remained consistent all year, giving them a slight advantage, although they are targeting different audiences.

While SC Johnson mainly focused on news and education publishers, RB (1% mobile) is going for more than that, expanding into arts & entertainment, health & fitness, hobbies & interests publishers. The Clorox Company has made an effort to reach out to technology and computing publishers on mobile, an area neither SC Johnson nor RB have even touched.
