Imperial Tobacco names head of global marketing experiences as “retail-friendly” marketing continues
Subject: In-Store, ATL, Global, Press, B2B, Experiential.
Company: Imperial Tobacco is a multinational tobacco company.
Opportunity: From this month, Mr. Rolf Zingg is to be the new head of global marketing experiences, developing new approaches, driving brand recommendation and managing global agency relationships in a way to change the creative delivery of Imperial Tobacco’s focus brands.
This comes on the heels of the company reporting a 19% rise in profits, despite a 4.4% decline in revenues and total tobacco volumes slipping 3.1% in the year ended September. This included net revenue up 12% for its ‘growth brands’, following a successful brand migration programme implementation that is ongoing to support Imperial Tobacco’s growth brand portfolio development as well as tighter cost controls. Overall group market share remains at 13.3%.
Still, the brand has to find ways to combat the increasing globally adopted consumer mindset of health concerns for smoking. Tobacco companies have attempted to address these concerns through the launches and acquisitions of ecigs, which have also recently generated health concerns. Another challenge to face is that the UK government plans to introduce plain packaging on cigarettes from May 2016, which Imperial Tobacco is fighting in courts with a ruling expected by February.
Despite this, a new pack design and equity campaign for Golden Virginia called “Rock and Roll” is expected to go live in the UK soon, while a the company continues to focus on more “retail-friendly” marketing. Looking ahead, Imperial Tobacco says its marketing and promotional strategy concentrates on “revitalising the historical brand strength of Winston and Kool and will involve competitive promotional price activity and appropriate merchandising at retail,” according to Imperial Tobacco.
The tobacco giant’s main growth brands include Davidoff, Gauloises, L&B, Bastos, Parker & Simpson, News, JSP, FINE, West and Winston. Specialist brands include Gitanes, Style, Cohiba, Montecristo, Route 66, Drum, Golden Virginia, Rizla, Backwoods, Skurf, Blue and Kool.
Experience: Mr. Zingg has been with Imperial Tobacco since Sept. 2012 when he joined as group marketing, global OTP category marketing manager. He was later promoted to head of global category development, then adding on head of global strategic partners nearly two years later. Prior to Imperial Tobacco, he was with Cadbury in various category development and marketing roles. He was with Unilever prior to 2006.
Agency Roster: Imperial Tobacco works with Proximity London.
