Digital Opp: Church & Dwight ups digital as EU turns into largest subsidiary

Opportunity: Church & Dwight is actually benefiting from its competitors’ switch to digital, which often leads to an overall marketing spend decrease.

Chairman & Chief Executive Officer James R. Craigie told shareholders last week that Church & Dwight will be “increasing [their] commitment to digital,” but at the same time, they aren’t going to be “using that as an excuse to cut marketing spending.”

So expect marketing to stay at 12.5% of the company’s sales and keep an eye out of their share of voice as a result, which is already up in most categories. Expect new advertising and brand innovations to come out of this as  Mr. Craigie stated, “2015 is expected to be an exciting year for Church & Dwight as we have launched a number of innovative new products across every one of our megabrands and continue to support our 2014 launches.”

Also know that Mr Craigie will be retiring at the end of this year and Mr Matt Farrell, current COO and CFO, will be promoted as his successor .

European Growth: International organic growth was up 9.5% during the first quarter and Europe has now passed Canada as Church & Dwight’s largest subsidiary. The company experienced strong strong in the UK, largely driven by two brands, Batiste and Sterimar, the nasal hygiene brand. However, net sales in this region saw a 2.8% decrease year over year. 

Competition: The Clorox Company, The Proctor & Gamble Company

Agency Roster: Media Therapy handles creative and Maxus handles the media account, according to TLO. The company says they are happy with these long-term relationships, so we don’t expect them to change any time soon.

Media Spend: Spent almost 5% more in Nielsen-tracked media spend last year, up to £3.7 million from £3.5m in 2013. Most of this was in TV, the same as years before.
