Spons./ Event Opps: Barclaycard appoints senior experiential, partnership marketer


Update (05 Oct): Mr. Roscoe Bowman was appointed as Barclaycard’s VP, senior partnerships and experiential marketing manager, having previously handled sponsorship for Barclays Africa Group. He’s based in London.

This comes shortly after Mr. Charles Kightley changed roles to VP of UK partnerships, from a role in digital customer experience, and just over one year after CMO Katherine Whitton was appointed. The credit card company has recently amped up digital marketing activity, so reach out in regards to that as well (more below).

Mr. Bowman was most recently head of group sponsorship for Barclays Africa Group Limited, after serving as group sponsorship manager the year before. Prior to that, he handled some brand management and sponsorship at SABMiller, also based in South Africa.

WinmoEdge Interview: In January 2014, Alex Naylor, head of marketing communications, planning and development for Barclaycard, told WinmoEdge the following:

“At Barclaycard, we are focused on creating a more holistic brand narrative with our audiences.  We now plan around content principles and are set up for multi-device, multi-dimensional conversations that transcend channels. The biggest challenge facing marketers today is operational – we must respond, engage and be genuinely creative in real-time because that's just what our audiences do.”

Media Spend: Spent nearly 22% less in Nielsen-tracked media spend last year, compared to £43.4m in 2013. Direct Mail continues to be the main element here.

Digital Breakdown (updated for 05 Oct): Moat UK reports that Barclaycard has run 92 standard display, 38 high impact and three video ads so far this year. These have run with 524 publishers, less than 1% of which were on mobile. Of these, 10% were published directly through the publisher as opposed to through an ad server. Activity shot up drastically at the end of Aug., with video most active in late February. This is certainly already outpacing last year’s activity.
