Q4, Q1 Opps: American Express ups marketing to attract new card members

Company: American Express (Amex) is one of the leading financial services companies in the world.

Opportunity: After closing out Q3 with double digit growth in the UK, the vulnerable account continues to invest more in marketing, promotions and technology as to attract new card members and additional spending to its network. 

The third quarter, in particular, saw higher spending (+8% YoY and significantly higher than Q2) due to the roll out of Apple Pay to corporate card and UK card members, an expansion of the Plenti loyalty coalition programme and marketing to potential card holders across consumer small business and corporate franchises. 

This strategy will continue into Q4 and beyond, seeing higher spending more concentrated on third and fourth quarters. American Express is also investing in longer term technology initiatives with efforts focused on expanding and enhancing digital capabilities to middle market corporations and small businesses. These enhancements allow Amex to use data and analytics from the close loop to generate more targeted marketing, as well. Digital Breakdown: Moat UK reports that American Express has run 524 standard, 103 high impact and 28 video ads (3% mobile) so far this year with 3,662 publishers. Running roughly 147% more display ads than last year, 90% of these were published via programmatic (3% less than last year). 

Key publishing periods this year were Q1 and Q3 across a broad range of publishers including imgur.com, shopstyle.co.uk, popsugar.co.uk and ticketmaster.com. Mobile, on the other hand, is more concentrated on shopping and arts & entertainment publishers, while video was more present on news publishers.

Media Spend: Spent almost 3% more in Nielsen-tracked media spend last year, up to £21.3 million, due to a large increase in outdoor media spend.
