Electronic Arts (EA) gaming promotes recent hire to head of mobile

Update (13 July): EA has chosen a new head of its mobile division to lead the charge against game consoles the world ’round.

Ms. Samantha Ryan, who was just hired in March as the SVP and Group GM for EA, says she hopes to “keep the smartphone, arguably the most ubiquitous gaming device in the world, a primary focus at EA.”

She commented in a recent statement, “The power of mobile is that it not only changes how we make and play games, but it also expands our reach to entirely new types of players.”

In its most recent quarterly earnings report from May, EA stated that its mobile revenue set a new record, contributing £341m for the FY, and that monthly active users for mobile titles averaged more than 165m.

The revenue was attributed primarily to small purchases made within apps.

We may see the brand seek a mobile agency in the near future to market mobile capabilities around the globe. The media agency EA seeks, which has still not been chosen, may also need to have a mobile division since new emphasis is being made in that realm.

It also seems, according to Ms. Ryan’s statement, that she will be moving the brand into new markets to target new audiences. Consider this when reaching out.

Subject: TV, Internet, Outdoor.

Company: Electronic Arts (EA)

Predicted Opportunity (Mediacom UK has held the account since 2010.

Meanwhile, the EVP of EA's Mobile Mr Frank Gibeau is set to leave the company to pursue other things after over 23 years with the publisher. Until he is securely replaced, the mobile division, a core part of the company's business plan, will report to EA's CEO Andrew Wilson. He said the following:

“As the mobile gaming audience continues its rapid expansion, EA has a tremendous opportunity to deliver amazing entertainment to more players around the world.”

This latest executive shift follows the WinmoEdge's Vulnerable Accounts map. His appointment was part of a company-wide transformation that put player relationships at the center of its business.

Bruzzo's experience at Starbucks establishing loyalty via social media should certainly come in handy with this and as EA's business becomes increasingly digital. Therefore, look for opportunities across the social marketing and point-to-point marketing landscapes that will help EA better engage gamers.

Media Spend: Spent nearly 26% less in Nielsen-tracked media spend during 2014, compared to £4.5m in 2013. TV, Internet and Outdoor are the main areas of spending.

Moat reports that EA has run 416 standard display ads in the last year with 5,755 publishers, 12% of which were mobile. Of these 24% were published directly through the publisher, all others were published through an ad server or platform. Most of this took place at the end of last year. Expect a similar trend this year starting in September.

Agency Roster: Works with PrettyGreen for consumer PR (since 2012).
