Future Possibility – Score 38: General Electric hires PR firm VaynerMedia
Subject: Technology, Global, PR, Communications, TV, Digital, Print
Company: The General Electric Company (Winmo), the world's Digital Industrial Company, transforming industry with software-defined machines and solutions that are connected, responsive and predictive.
Opportunity: Appointed PR agency VaynerMedia to support its media operations in Europe after working with the agency on a global basis for about five years focusing on brand strategy across digital and social channels.
GE Europe’s industry-specific market expertise lie in Real Estate, Commercial Aviation Services and Energy Financial Services. However, the tech company shifted its communications strategy in addition to selling off financial assets (listed below) in a year-long effort to return to its industrial core.
These sales will generate global capital to be distributed across many different departments. A drop in media spending last year, but an increase in digital, proves GE is focusing on digital and social outlets. The company’s recent venture with VaynerMedia, could suggest a return to the original brand GE was built around, technology.
VaynerMedia has a particular/personal motivation to drive GE growth as the agency is opening its UK location this month and has GE’s media as its main priority. Digital and creative agencies should contact soon to be considered for the company’s media push in Q4.
Media Spend: Nielson data from 2014 reports GE spent over £76k on media across TV, press, and digital channels. They continued with a similar strategy in 2015 spending in TV, press, digital, and even a little towards radio with the largest push occurring in Q4. Top publisher categories include news and technology and computers.
Digital Breakdown: Moat reports that GE ran 184 display ads on 284 publishers last year. With the majority placed site direct versus programmatically, top ad destinations included arstechnica.com, iod.com, and biopharminternational.com. The company also ran 27 high impact ads and ten video ads. For comparison, in 2014 113 display were run on 139 publishers and 19 high impact ads were also run. This increase in digital could be due to the natural transition of news publications and technology trades magazines updating digitally.
Acquisitions: May 2015, GE announced an agreement for the largest acquisition in GE's history of Alstom's Power & Grid business, in an effort to strengthen GE's position in the grid sector. Last September, GE announced the sale of its Appliances business to Electrolux for £2.2 billion. In addition, it sold its transportation financing unit to BMO Financial Group, along with its health care lending unit and related loans to Capital One for £6.2 billion.
Q2 of 2016, GE will sell its US hotel franchise loan portfolio to a unit of Western Alliance Bancorp. Finally, in this year’s third quarter a £335 million sale for its GE Asset Management is set to close with State Street Corporation.
Competitors: Mitsubishi Corporations, and Textron.
