Online, Digital Opps: Danone Waters taps eCommerce head to drive online grocery
Subject: Social, Digital, Experiential, Promotional, PPC, Online, eCommerce.
Company: Danone Waters, which owns Volvic, Evian and Badoit brands.
Opportunity: Not too long after HeyHuman as its digital and social media agency, Danone Waters sees Lucy Bellamy join as head of eCommerce.
As online is the fastest growing channel within the UK grocery market, Danone is looking to expand its role in grocery eCommerce, so expect Ms. Bellamy to be working directly with grocers, creative agencies and brand marketers to roll out new product imagery, digital/online media and search/PPC initiatives.
With a traditional financial year, Danone will soon close out its 2015 financial year and is likely towards the end of budget planning for the 2016 financial year. Q1 tends to be a higher spending period, in addition to Q3 when cold beverages see higher sales in the summer months.
Danone Waters increased turnover by 16.1% in 2014, while operating profit decreased 2.6% due to ongoing challenging conditions in Europe. This may no longer be the case as the global bottled water products market is expected to reach £206bn by 2022, having been worth £106.45bn in 2014.
The company has been active in experiential and promotional campaigns, with support via TV, social and digital mediums. As the market of health-conscious consumers continues to grow, bottled waters and flavoured waters are increasingly popular with global consumption of packaged water set to overtake carbonates this year, growing 37% from 2010.
Experience: Ms. Bellamy has been with Danone since 2006 in various category, channel marketing and digital roles. Most recently, she was the eCommerce, digital transformation manager for Danone.
Competition: Key players in the bottled water products market include Coca-Cola Company, Nestle Waters and PepsiCo Inc.
Media Spend: Groupe Danone spent £17.6m last year in total measured media, according to Nielsen. This was an 8% increase from 2013 spending, mostly due to a +£2m increase in TV advertising.
Digital Breakdown: Danone has run 11 standard, four high impact and three video ads this year with eight publishers, according to Moat UK. Of those ads run so far this year, 76% were run publisher-direct. Key destinations were disney.co.uk, dailymail.co.uk, cambridgenews.co.uk, leicestermercury.co.uk and wwe.com. The highest activity periods were in April, June/July and September.
Last year during the same period (Jan-Nov), Danone ran seven standard and one high impact ad with 91 publishers, 16% publisher-direct.
Agency Roster: launched a TV and cinema ad in July this year for Volvic Touch of Fruit in an effort to appeal to a young, creative audience.
