Media opp: Pepsico set to distribute its Cheetos brand in the UK, shifts branding

Update (04 June): Pepsico is bringing its beloved puffy orange crisps from the U.S. to the UK convenience channel. The snacks are already distributed via third party retailers, but now Pepsico will be the brand distributor for the country.

The range will also include price-marked packaging – which research by Him! revealed is preferable to 61% of shoppers.

This launch follows a report in April that for Q1, Pepsico’s revenue in the Frito-Lay business rose 3.1% to £2bn. This was partly due to product roll outs, like Cheetos Sweetos and Rold Gold Pretzel Dippers.

Take note that in the U.S., Frito-Lay just last month decided to ditch the agency-of-record model, confirmed by North America CMO Ram Krishnan. Mr. Krishnan explained that the brand has shifted to a project-by-project approach for its creative, and will call on multiple agencies for content.

Opportunity (27 April): European demand was weak in the first quarter, after PepsiCo increased its prices as a result of currency impacts, according to CFO Hugh Johnston. The company's net revenue fell 3.2%, for the first time in a year, despite the stronger dollar uplifting revenue to 4.4%.

Media Spend: PepsiCo spent £5.4m last year, down by almost 26% from 2013 spending which was £7.28m, according to Nielsen. Pepsico spent 88% of its 2012 media budget in TV, a large area for the company; however, Outdoor spending significantly increased last year. 

Moat reports that Pepsico has run 318 standard display ads so far this year on 3,792 publishers, 22% of which were on mobile. 66% of these ads were published direct.
