Mazda steals Kia digital marketer, as display and video ads increase

Opportunity: John Bache has left Kia to join Mazda this month as its new digital marketing manager, which is the same month when its digital advertising activity has sky rocketted. This follows last month’s reports that the company is seeing lower profits, despite increase in sales, however Europe was the only region that actually saw sales fall.

This month also marks Mazda’s 10 year anniversary of its launch of its innovative digital service record system in the UK, the first manufacturer to do so. This was a smart move as a complete maintenance record can increase a car’s resale value by up to 26%, according to ICM research.

The car retailer is launching its new Mazda MX-5 in late summer, its third model launch of 2015. Reach out now to get involved in marketing and advertising plans for this. Also keep in mind that Mazda has a history in sponsoring music events and festivals and sports such as Rugby League Four Nations and International Motor Sports Association. Music festivals and music tourism is a a huge opportunity to reach a global audience, as last year overseas visitors made up 546,000 of music tourist, each spending an average of £751, according to The Wish you were here report by industry body UK Music.

Experience: Mr Bache was most recently head of customer communications at Kia Motors, overseeing digital and CRM. He was with Kia since Aug. 2006 starting as customer database manager, then database and digital marketing manager before it latest position. Prior to this, he was customer marketing manager for John Armit Wines, marketing manager for Gray & Osbourn and marketing executive for Great Universal Stores PLC.

Digital Breakdown: Moat UK reports that Mazda has run 80 standard display, 96 high impact and 12 video ads so far this year.

Over 20% of them were run this month, which make sense because last Aug. also had its highest annual daily activity. This is mostly because of a summer promotion, particularly the Motability's regional ‘One Big Day' events at the Peterborough Arena, Cambridgeshire, on Thursday, 6 August and Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, on Saturday, 12 September.

These were run with 1,700 publisher (<1% mobile) and 8% of them ran directly, as opposed to through programmatic.

Publishers were mostly cars.com, stylist.co.uk and msn.com. Mobile ads were sparse but also higher than ever this month, while video was at its highest daily activity on late Feb. and early March.

Media Spend: Mazda UK has spend around the same in total measured media over the last three years, according to Nielsen, averaging over £8m. Last year, media totalled £8.5 million, which was just 0.5% less than 2013 spending.  Press, Radio and TV took the most of this.
