Account in Jeopardy – Score 72: Renault shifts UK boss, head marketer seats

Subject: TV, Outdoor, Cinema, Press, Digital, Display, Mobile, Branding.

Company: Renault (Winmo) is a multinational vehicle manufacturer. The company produces a range of new and used cars, vans, and electric vehicles.

we told you Renault was stepping up efforts to “reinforce” its brand position in the UK. Earlier this month, the company promoted UK MD Ken Ramirez to SVP of sales and marketing for Europe, effective 1 April. His replacement has yet to be announced.

In January, the company announced the next phase of its GO5+ plan, a 5-year plan launched in 2013, which signals a shift in its customer care strategy. Renault wants to deliver more than 5% group market share, have top-tier network profitability and a Top 10 ranking in quality and brand image by 2017. The company experienced unprecedented growth last year and remains the fastest growing franchise in the country, but Renault claims that 2016 has even more growth potential because of several product launches fueling profit. Automotive, entertainment, news and sports sellers will have an advantage and should engage ahead of the summer, when the company plans to launch the all-new Mégane, followed by an all-new version of Scenic MPV a little later in the year. Agencies should approach Mr Boyer over the course of the next few weeks while he’s evaluating strategy and budgets.

Additional Information

Media Spend: Renault spent 1.9% more in Nielsen-tracked media spend in 2014, up to £27.3m, compared to 2013 spend, which was up by almost 68% year-over-year. This increased was based on more spending in TV and press last year and in cinema and Internet the year before. Q3 has historically been the company’s highest spending period.

Digital Breakdown: Last year, Renault ran 812 standard display ads with 979 destinations, 5% of which were mobile. Of those ads run, 80% were published site-direct versus programmatic. Top ad destinations included itv.com, whatcar.com and carbuyer.co.uk. In addition, the company ran 134 high impact ads and 44 video ads.

In comparison, Renault ran 267 standard ads with 818 publishers in 2014, 58% of which were run publisher-direct on similar destinations.

Competition: The UK is a very competitive marketplace, and Renault currently only holds 2.5% of the European market (half-way to its 2017 goal) and 4% of the UK, which it is satisfied with currently. Regardless, it has a whole lot of growth potential and has already experienced positive growth as the market continues its recovery. There have been many brands that have tried to compete with the Dacia brand, which is advertised as very affordable.
