Branding, Digital, TV Opps: Kia hires former Toyota brand marketer to develop TTL strategy

Company: Kia Motors, manufacturers and markets new and used automotive vehicles and affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group

Opportunity: A commercial automobile veteran, Mr. James Curtis comes in as Kia’s head of marketing communications this month. He is tasked with developing and implementing a through-the-line brand communications campaign strategy across new/used vehicles, dealer and fleet functional areas.

Working with creative, digital, social and media agencies, he will manage marketing initiatives across TV, digital, web, social, CRM, PR and retailer. He joins recently-appointed and former Barclaycard advertising manager, Ms. Sally Miller, who became Kia’s head of communications in April. 

Experience: Mr. Curtis has been in the global automobile industry since 2003, working in Australia, Japan and London, spending the majority of his career with Toyota, arguably one of Kia’s top competitors. He has led sponsorship, global brand development, product launch communications, sales campaigns, strategic planning, digital, social, corporate strategies and marketing. 

Marketing Strategy: Kia, the fourth largest car company in the world, has Honda.  

Kia markets itself mostly by using above-the-line activity (the most expensive kind) including press, billboards, website, cinema and TV, which often reaches a mass audience with varied expectations and needs. The benefit to this is brand familiarity, often leading to consumer trust, which is why the Kia Soul beat Toyota’s Scion and Ford’s Fiesta in sales during 2010. This year is all about the Sedona and Sorento.

Below-the-line activity by Kia includes sports sponsorships, sales promotions, PR, direct marketing and social media. Kia targets a wide range of consumers through a varied product range, which has so far proven to be successful with sales figures increasing over the last two years. Hyundai Motors, however, saw profits fall to the lowest level in five years this month, blamed on China and U.S. markets.

Digital Breakdown: Kia has run 52 standard, 128 high impact and 14 video ads (15% mobile) so far this year with 426 publishers, according to Moat UK. Of those, 75% ran publisher-direct. Key publishers were cars.com, edmunds.com and hollywoodreporter.com. Display and mobile had much higher daily activity in Q1, while video was prevalent in September this year.

Media Spend: Kia blew up cinema and outdoor advertising last year, reaching £17.8m in total measure media and upping Q2 and Q3 spending, according to Nielsen. The first half of this year has only seen £5.4m spent, mostly in TV.
