Social, Agency Opps: Vauxhall taps Weber Shandwick, but creative & media still vulnerable

51% Opportunity: The auto company just gave its UK social business to communications agency Weber Shandwick so that they can create a social strategy engaging Vauxhall’s consumer audience.

Reach out with social media buying opportunities, but if you’re an agency, keep in mind the account is likely open to agency approaches right now and we may see changes as early as next April. 

This follows Vauxhall giving its lifestyle PR account to Kaper to handle current sponsorships and work on future product launches. The agency replaced four-year incumbent John Doe, which remains only on GM's GMC and Buick lifestyle PR accounts.

Decision Makers: In late UK MD Tim Tozer left Vauxhall, leaving Mr. Rory Harvey to the post. It is not clear why this change occurred, but a spokesman at Vauxhall did confirm that it is not related to NOx emissions and the recent scandal at Volkswagen.

Simon Oldfield became the new sales and marketing director in March. Joining from Mercedes Benz, Mr. Oldfield is helping Vauxhall with new product launches and marketing in the newly-created role. In December, Mr. Chris Hawken was appointed as director of brand marketing.

Sponsorships: Sponsorship seems to be a new key focus for Vauxhall, given the promotion this month of Mr. Andrew Curley, former head of retail marketing, to head of sponsorship & events. This follows the appointment in June of Mr. Charlie Greenwood as sponsorship strategy consultant.

Reportedly, Mr. Greenwood was appointed to work with the senior sponsorship and marketing team at Vauxhall to help them achieve ROI from their sponsorship of the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish FA's. This includes developing the sponsorship objectives, creating opportunities for activation and maximising potential digital channels.

These decision maker changes coupled with a new PR agency and GM's strategic changes and spending shifts has led us to believe the company may need some outside assistance from an agency. Groups with experience in sponsorship strategy should reach out with haste and not allow this opportunity to slip by. Carat has been on the sponsorship account for awhile, but four years is a long time, and decision maker shifts may be indicative of a pending review.

Digital Breakdown (23 June): The Vauxhall brand has run 457 standard display ads (6% mobile), 95 high impact ads and five video ads since June 2014 in the UK, according to Moat. Of these, 41% were published directly on publishers including aol.com, telegraph.co.uk and weather.com. The majority of this activity took place last summer and last November.  Oddly, mobile ads have been less frequent this year, but video ads were a heavy part of Feb. activity.

Media Spend: Vauxhall Motors (GM) spent £27.8m in total measured media in 2014, according to Nielsen, which was a 24% decline on 2013 spend. Outdoor and Press were the only categories that increased spend YoY. TV, Press and Outdoor had the most investment in 2014, though TV's spend dropped by almost half YoY.
