Opportunity: Chris Rodi has become the marketing director for Maltesers, M&Ms and Galaxy Bitesize brands recently, having spent the last 2+ years as M&Ms brand director. This comes as global CMO Bruce McColl plans to step down after 24 years at the company, a decade as marketing boss. In June, he’ll be succeeded by Andrew Clarke, who takes on a newly-created title of chief marketing and customer officer. 
 
Maltesers outpaced Cadbury Dairy Milk as the UK’s top selling chocolate brand in convenience stores last year, with annual sales of nearly £50m. The Mondelez brand, of course, still dominates the confectionery, tobacco and news retailers (CTNs) sector, but the Mars brand has overtaken the groups, independents and travel outlets driven by its sharing bags. Sellers should expect more attention across these brands after the company moved its US digital media to Starcom last summer (did not translate globally). The confectionery giant began to see how programmatic and e-commerce could attract larger audiences with more personalised messaging based on shopper behaviours. Mars also uses a lot of video advertising.

The year before, Mars consolidated its global media planning with BBDO handles creative, but traditional and digital creative agencies should look to win some business with these brands over the next year.

Experience: Mr Rodi has been with Mars Confectionery since July 2010 in various brand, sponsorship and marketing roles. He joined from GlaxoSmithKline.

Media Spend: Spent £36.7m in 2014, up +12% year-on-year with a nearly £10m boost in TV ad spend. Radio and digital also increased. Q3 is the company’s biggest spending period

Digital Breakdown: Maltesers has run four ads on four publishers in the last 12 months, all of them using programmatic instead of site-direct. M&Ms has run 23 ads with 29 publishers (7% mobile) in the last year, according to Moat. These were also all published using a third party programmatic buyer. This was in addition to two high impact and nine video ads. Mars collectively has run 209 standard ads with 979 publishers during this time, 32% of which have run site-direct. The company has also run 12 high impact ads and 111 video ads. Top destinations included confetti.co.uk, you and yourwedding.co.uk and allrecipes.co.uk.
