Account in Jeopardy - Score 70: Arriva Bus hires marketing director ahead of planned IPO

Subject: Digital, TV, Radio, Outdoor, Door Drop, AdTech, Social.

Company: Arriva Bus (UK), one of the largest providers of passenger transport in Europe, and is part of the Arriva group, which is owned by Deutsche Bahn. The UK bus arm runs CrossCountry, London Overground, Chiltern and Grand Central trains.

Opportunity: Hired former Princes Limited marketer Julie Linforth as marketing director, several months after Arriva welcomed Gillian Singh as marketing and new product development director this January.

Reporting to Peter Telford, finance and commercial director – UK Bus, Singh oversees strategic commercial activity such as smart ticketing, customer data and insight and sustainable passenger growth strategies. It is likely Linforth was brought on to assist with these large tasks. Her commercially-minded and customer-focused strategies will help Arriva with its goal of delivering customer satisfaction on its buses pillar.

Parent company Deutsche Bahn is moving forward with plans to float Arriva with a final decision expected in autumn. Agencies are poised to win new business and should be engaging key in-house decision makers for the rest of the year.

The transportation brand has significantly increased digital activity this year after slowing it down last year. Programmatic buying has also increased, so sellers and shops with expertise here will do well winning revenue. Note that peak travel period is already taking place, but Q4 tends to see another slew of travellers going home to visit families or going on a vacation to celebrate key end-of-the-year festivities.

Career, news and entertainment sellers should also have an advantage. PHD North has handled media planning and buying for CrossCountry since 2009 but won the full Arriva business in 2014.

Additional Information

Experience: Linforth spent nearly four years helping deliver on a business sector strategy and development of the Aqua Pura brand strategy and campaigns. Prior to this, she was a brand and customer marketing manager at Makro UK. She's also held brand and marketing roles at Thorntons, M&J Seafood, Brakes and The Foundry.

Singh joined in January after holding an interim board level marketing role at GBS Marketing consultancy. Prior to that she was group marketing director of Go-Ahead Group for more than six years.

Media Spend: Spent £1.1m last year, according to Nielsen. This was 8% higher than 2014. Key spending areas are TV, radio, outdoor and door drop.

Digital Breakdown: Per Moat, Arriva has run 57 standard display ads on 154 publishers. Of those, 36% were published site-direct versus programmatically. Top display destinations included jobsite.co.uk, ilfattoquotidiano.it and dailypost.co.uk.

During the same period last year, Arriva ran four standard ads with seven publishers (29% mobile). Of those, 97% were published site-direct and top destinations were nationalrail.co.uk, bucksfreepress.co.uk and wakefieldexpress.co.uk.

Target Audience: A national and EU-wide audience as Arriva claims to make 2.2 billion passenger journeys across 14 European countries each year.

Competitors: FirstGroup, The Go-Ahead Group, Atlantic Express Transportation
